Coaching Bios
Ed McGrane- Varsity Green Co-Head Coach
A native of Hamilton, Ontario, McGrane was a four year standout and captain at UMass-Lowell (DI), where he led the River Hawks all four seasons, tallying 70 goals and 138 points in 144 career games. He was a 2-time member of the All-Hockey East Team and was inducted into the school's athletic Hall of Fame in 2016. Following college, he signed an NHL free agent contract with the Minnesota Wild. In 11 seasons playing professionally, McGrane racked up 286 goals and 701 points in 598 games in the AHL, ECHL, CHL and Europe. In 2009, McGrane led the Colorado Eagles to a CHL championship while leading the league in goals (44).
Mark Syvret- Varsity Green Co-Head Coach
Hailing from Montreal, Quebec, Syvret brings a wealth of elite hockey experience to the ice, rooted in his background with the LaSalle Cyclones (AA) and three seasons of Tier 2 Junior hockey. With over 15 years of coaching experience, Syvret spent six seasons leading the U14 AA program in Montreal before transitioning to Ohio, where he has been a cornerstone of the EYHA coaching staff for the past nine years. Most recently, he has served as a head coach for the U16 Mavericks.
Beyond the bench, Syvret is a key figure in regional player development, serving as a developmental coach for the Blue Jackets Youth Hockey League. His expertise is frequently sought after for camps hosted by the Columbus Blue Jackets, The Chiller, and EYHA. Mark is dedicated to preparing the next generation of athletes for the highest levels of competitive play.
Declan Costello - Varsity Blue Head Coach
Costello was a member of the Bowling Green State University ACHA D2 Men's Hockey team. Aside from his time as a player, Costello spent 3 years working in hockey operations and video for the NCAA D1 Men's Hockey at his alma mater.
He also made coaching stops as a coach in USA Hockey girls development camps and as a development coach for a youth hockey program in his home state of Ohio.
Joey Recktenwald - Varsity Blue Associate Head Coach
Originally hailing from Northeast Ohio, Joey has spent most of his life in and around ice rinks. He grew up playing youth hockey in Athens, OH followed by seasons with the Cleveland Americans and Gilmour Academy, before playing four seasons of varsity high school hockey with the Kenston Bombers. Following graduation, Joey moved east to play junior hockey with the Elmira Jr. Jackals of the Empire Hockey League. He returned to Ohio where he spent his final junior season with the Columbus Jr. B Blue Jackets of the Central States Hockey League.
After semi-pro stints with Findlay Freedom of the NEHL and the Wooster Warriors of the MAHL, Joey accepted the Varsity Head Coach position with the Northeast Storm of the OSHL. Following his stint with the Storm, Joey spent 7 years as an assistant coach of the Hilliard Wildcats of the OSHL, and is now President of NCDC & USPHL Columbus Mavericks.
